Welcome to Ashlyn's all about OT blog! My name is Ashlyn, and I am a current Occupational Therapy student at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Prior to starting at UTHSC, I attended Mississippi State University, where I obtained a Bachelor's of Science. I am just starting my journey to becoming an Occupational Therapist, and couldn't be more excited to have you along to read about all OT!

Assuming the soldier  lost the bet, and had is little finger chopped off, a daily occupation that might be impacted for him would be working on machinery. Without his little finger, the soldier  would not be able to perform opposition  (bring the little finger and thumb together), which is an essential part of fine motor control. Without opposition it would make it difficult to work on his machinery for his job. It would also impact his ability to hold on to things. Grip strength requires the use of all your fingers, and without  the little finger, your grip strength would decrease   significantly . In the soldiers  daily occupations, decreased grip strength could negatively affect his ability  to hold his gun or other weapons. A modification that might help the soldier  participate in his occupations is getting a hand grip with a prosthetic finger. A Reflection on the Eleanor Clark Slagle Lecture by Gordon Muir Giles

       In 2018 the Eleanor Clark Slagle award was given to Gordon Muir Giles, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA. Giles attended St. Andrew's School of Occupational Therapy on the grounds of St. Andrew's Hospital in the United Kingdom. In the 1980's, when Giles attended school, St. Andrews Hospital was the UK's premiere psychiatric hospital.  When Giles was accepted into the occupational therapy program, he was one of the first four students to have already obtained a bachelor's degree. Most of the other students admitted came in straight from high school. While Giles was attending school, he volunteered at Kemsley, a unit at St. Andrew's Hospital for people with neurologically based behavioral disorders. After graduation, Giles joined the rehabilitation team at Kemsley.         Some other events that happened in the year 2018, when this award was received was the #MeToo Movements going global and the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle....

Wheelchairs

 In class this week, we were assigned to read two chapters from the book "50 Abilities, Unlimited Possibilities: Wheeling Through 50 States From Jackson to the Boston Marathon Bombing" by Paul Erway. Each chapter in the book is about a marathon in a different state that Paul Erway participated in. The two states I chose to read and reflect on were Florida and Louisiana.  Florida: Miami, Florida was the 4th race Erway competed in. When Erway and others arrived in Miami, he had arranged for a wheelchair-accessible rental van for the weekend. It turned out that the van was not wheelchair-accessible, but the company said it was accommodating, meaning that the driver was strong enough to lift them into the van. They were later able to secure a wheelchair-accessible Caravan for the weekend through the help of the National Mobility Dealers Association.
