Man from the South Reflection

Assuming the soldier lost the bet, and had is little finger chopped off, a daily occupation that might be impacted for him would be working on machinery. Without his little finger, the soldier would not be able to perform opposition (bring the little finger and thumb together), which is an essential part of fine motor control. Without opposition it would make it difficult to work on his machinery for his job. It would also impact his ability to hold on to things. Grip strength requires the use of all your fingers, and without the little finger, your grip strength would decrease significantly. In the soldiers daily occupations, decreased grip strength could negatively affect his ability to hold his gun or other weapons. A modification that might help the soldier participate in his occupations is getting a hand grip with a prosthetic finger. This modification would address an adaption outcome.

At the end of the story, it is discovered that the man who was placing the bet had a wife who had a hand with only one finger and a thumb. Her daily routines over the years have changed significantly as she has no opposition or little to no grip strength. A daily routine that is impacted by her "situation" is washing her hair. In the story she said she had to go get her hair washed by someone else. A modification that the wife could use to be able to wash her own hair is getting a modified scalp scrubber with some sort of strap for it to stay on her hand. This device would giver her the ability to move around the product in her hair.

  1. Ashlyn, I liked how you included an image of the prosthetic finger as it helps to visualize what that would look like for the soldier. In my blog about this story I also said a scalp scrubber would be beneficial for the wife to wash her hair! Scalp scrubbers are such a great way to modify hair washing!

  2. Ashlyn, you brought up a great point that the soldier's inability to perform opposition could impact his role as a soldier. I also agree that it would be beneficial to the wife if she were able to wash her own hair, and a scalp scrubber is a cost effective way to help her do that.

  3. Hi Ashlyn, I like the modification that you thought of for the wife. I personally use a scalp scrubber and never realized how adaptive it could be for someone. I'm sure it will make washing hair easier and possibly quicker for the wife if she used this modification!
